CHICAGO – To help address the issues communities face from the failed War on Drugs and decades of disinvestment, state Rep. Justin Slaughter, D-Chicago, is encouraging local community organizations to apply for state grants under the Restore, Reinvest, and Renew (R3) grant program.

“Our communities have been battered by high rates of crime, unemployment and chronic disinvestment that have produced hopelessness,” said Slaughter. “I am proud of this effort and the hope that it represents for our communities.”

The Illinois Criminal justice Information Authority recently issued a funding opportunity notice for its R3 grant. The grant will provide community organizations across Illinois with $45 million in funding for civil legal aid, economic development, re-entry services, violence prevention and youth development in communities that have been historically disproportionately impacted by the War on Drugs. Interested organizations can visit https://r3.illinois.gov/ to apply.

“Too many of our communities have been left behind and suffer from an acute lack of economic opportunity which has led to crime and other societal ills,” said Slaughter. “I am proud of the progressive cannabis legalization legislation that paved the way for the R3 program.”
