Hernandez Working to Find New Solutions to Housing Statewide Challenges, Guarantee Housing for Illinoisans

AURORA, Ill. – State Rep. Barbara Hernandez, D-Aurora, took part in numerous productive discussions throughout November to help address housing problems in Illinois and consider how best to direct American Rescue Plan funding set aside for that area.

“Housing is a human right and I firmly believe securing that right for Illinois families should be a priority for the legislature,” Hernandez said. “With the new funding from the American Rescue Plan, right now we have an opportunity to strike a blow against housing inequality. I’m pleased to say that my colleagues and I have had numerous productive discussions with stakeholders about the best way to move forward, and this will lead to a stronger, safer future for Illinoisans in need of greater housing security during this difficult time.”

Hernandez sits on the House Housing committee, which met three times during November to hear from stakeholders about the best way to distribute new federal funding from the American Rescue Plan. This money will largely go to combatting housing insecurity related to the COVID-19 economic downturn. However, it will also provide the foundation for a more secure future beyond the challenges Illinois is currently facing.

“A robust economy is founded on sustainable, good-paying jobs for workers who are in a financially-secure position. Housing uncertainty puts that in jeopardy,” Hernandez said. “However, I am optimistic that the problems are facing are short-term. With the continued work of committed lawmakers, we can put this issue behind us.”
