GURNEE, Ill. – In recognition of November as American Diabetes Month, state Rep. Joyce Mason, D-Gurnee, is bringing awareness to American Diabetes Month. Mason is encouraging residents to seek preventative care for Type 1 and 2 Diabetes by getting screened annually.

“Many Illinoisans are at risk of developing diabetes and are likely unaware. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention up to a quarter of the U.S. population has prediabetes, the health factors that precede diabetes,” Mason said. “The best way to prevent the development of diabetes is getting an annual health screening in order to prevent diabetes-related illnesses.”

The American Diabetes Association (ADA) notes it is possible to have Type 1 or Type 2 Diabetes without any symptoms. Thus, Mason highlights the importance of annual screening to recognize risk factors and combat conditions associated with undiagnosed diabetes. Residents can find more information on their risk factors for diabetes by visiting the ADA’s website, diabetes.org.

“Seeking preventative care now can help prevent greater and more severe health problems in the future and help people maintain a high quality of life,” Mason said. “I recommend all residents learn their risk factors for diabetes and get screened for diabetes if they are at risk.”
