ROCKFORD, Ill. – In order to help keep residents safe, state Rep. Dave Vella, D-Rockford, is partnering with local elected officials and police departments to give away free gun locks to residents.
“When it comes to gun safety, one of the most important parts of keeping everyone safe is ensuring that guns are securely stored,” said Vella. “One of the best ways to properly store a gun is by using a gun lock, which renders firearms inoperable until they are unlocked. I highly encourage residents to take a few moments and come grab a free gun lock this Saturday.”
Vella is partnering with Machesney Park Mayor Steve Johnson, Loves Park Mayor Greg Jury, the Loves Park Police Department and the Winnebago County Sherriff’s Office to host the Gun Lock Giveaway on Saturday, Nov. 6 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the Loves Park City Hall, located at 100 Hearts Blvd. in Loves Park. At the event, residents will be able to receive a free gun lock while supplies last as well as assistance with their FOID card applications. There will also be a gun lock tutorial and demonstration to show residents how to use their new gun lock. For more information, please contact Vella’s full-time constituent service office at 815-329-6741.
“Using best safety practices with firearms is an important piece of being a responsible gun owner,” said Vella. “It is critical that gun owners have access to secure firearm storage, and I look forward to ensuring that we are promoting firearm safety in our community.”
