CARPENTERSVILLE, Ill. – Ahead of the upcoming flu season, state Rep. Suzanne Ness, D-Crystal Lake, is highlighting the importance of receiving the flu shot and continuing vigilance with mask-wearing to prevent contracting the flu and co-infection with COVID-19.

“As Illinois continues to see a rise in COVID-19 cases and more hospitals reach capacity, it is critical that we do everything in our power to prevent the spread of coronavirus, the flu and other illnesses in the upcoming months,” said Ness. “Receiving a flu shot each year is the best way to protect yourself from the flu. Just as we saw last year, wearing a mask when in public not only helps protect from COVID-19, but also significantly reduces the impact of the flu in our communities.”

As flu season approaches, Ness is encouraging residents to get a flu shot. Additionally, Ness is reminding residents of the importance of getting vaccinated against COVID-19 and wearing a face covering that covers the nose and mouth to prevent the transmission of other illnesses. The Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) also recommends staying home when sick and frequently washing hands. For more information on where to find vaccines near you, visit vaccines.gov.

“Both COVID-19 and the flu are extremely contagious and can potentially cause severe symptoms like fever, trouble breathing or shortness of breath,” continued Ness. “Protecting yourself by getting vaccinated, continuing to wear a mask and practicing other healthy habits are the best line of defense to stop the spread of COVID-19 and other illnesses this flu season.”
