Hurley Co-Hosts Take Back Event to Help Residents Discard Unused Prescription Drugs

CHICAGO – Local residents will have the opportunity to discard unused prescription drugs at a community event co-hosted by state Rep. Fran Hurley, D-Chicago.

“Unused prescription drugs and bottles left around the house can turn into a problem when disposed of improperly,” Hurley said. “Leftover pill bottles take up space in landfills, unused drugs could potentially cause contamination of our water supply and old drugs could potentially fall into the wrong hands, making it vital to dispose of unused prescriptions in a safe and environmentally-friendly way.”

In partnership with state Sen. Bill Cunningham, Merrionette Park Mayor Nevarez and the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District, Hurley is hosting a drug take back event on July 31. The event will take place at the Village of Merrionette Park Parking Lot, located at 11750 S. Kedzie Ave., from 10 a.m. to noon. Residents are encouraged to bring unneeded medication in loose bags or pill bottles.

“Making sure that prescription drugs are safely disposed of is one way to help keep our community safe,” Hurley said. “I encourage residents to clean out their medicine cabinet and join us in Merrionette Park to safely dispose of old or unneeded medication.”
