Yang Rohr Highlights ID Renewal Extensions Offered by the Secretary of State

NAPERVILLE, Ill. – State Rep. Janet Yang Rohr, D-Naperville, is informing residents of news from the Secretary of State’s Office that driver’s licenses and state ID card expiration dates have been extended.

“This past legislative session we were able to pass a measure that authorizes the Secretary of State’s office to extend driver’s license and ID card expiration dates,” said Yang Rohr. “The expiration extension will be extremely helpful to busy individuals who do not want to rush to the DMV, especially as many facilities are experiencing high volumes of individuals visiting since facilities have reopened after the pandemic.”

Yang Rohr helped pass Senate Bill 2232, which was recently signed into law. The measure authorizes the Secretary of State’s office to extend driver’s licenses and ID cards to Jan. 1, 2022. This January extension also includes expiration dates that will occur between July and December of this year. As a result, expired driver’s licenses and ID cards will remain valid until Jan. 1, 2022 so customers do not need to rush into Driver Services facilities, especially during hot weather. This extension does not apply to commercial driver’s licenses (CDL) and CDL learner’s permits.

The Secretary of State’s Office is encouraging residents to consider using online services when possible to decrease heavy in-person customer volume at driver’s facilities. To renew a new driver’s license or state ID card online, as well as purchase license plate stickers, individuals can visit the Secretary of State’s office website at www.cyberdriveillinois.com.
