NAPERVILLE, Ill. – For National Park and Recreation month this July, state Rep. Janet Yang Rohr, D-Naperville, is encouraging residents to take advantage of the important social and environmental benefits of natural spaces, parks and recreational areas.

“Our Illinois parks are beautiful, have historic value, and play an integral role for our neighborhoods by offering numerous recreational activities for families,” said Yang Rohr. “After last year’s difficult times, this summer is the perfect time to enjoy being outdoors and participate in many of the returning family activities and recreational programs.”

According to research conducted by the Trust for Public Land, residents are more likely to engage in physical activity where there is access to parks. Environmentally, parks and green spaces provide considerable benefits, like reducing air and water pollution and providing cooling effects in urban areas to reduce summer energy usage. Also, parks and green spaces are known to increase both commercial and residential property values, and the effect of parks and open spaces are attractive to companies and businesses.

“Parks have always been a central point in many communities and neighborhoods for residents to gather together safely and engage with one another.” said Yang Rohr. “Parks and natural spaces are critical to a better quality of life for all families. I encourage everyone to take some time to enjoy the many parks we have all over Illinois and to bring a friend or family member with you.”
