SPRINGFIELD, Ill – State Rep. Delia C. Ramirez, D-Chicago, releases the following statement on the passage of HB2908, which passed the House today and will create a path to a fully elected school board for Chicago Public Schools once signed into law.

“I am honored to celebrate legislating a path forward to a fully elected school board for Chicago Public Schools. This has been a long time coming and I am grateful to finally be able to deliver this to the overwhelming majority of Chicagoans who have supported this issue. While this bill is not perfect, as it does not have a timeline I would have wanted, it lays the foundation for a new day for Chicago Public Schools. It is time for CPS parents to finally have a democratic say in how their schools are run. They deserve the same rights that parents have in every other district in our state.

I want to thank Senator Martwick for his leadership in ushering this through the Senate and for laying the foundation for what we have accomplished today. I also want to thank Speaker Welch for his commitment to this issue and making sure we came back to take this vote and finished this important work. I also recognize the critical work of parents who have organized for an elected school board: thank you for fearlessly and tirelessly fighting for the schools your children deserve.

I am grateful to finally get this done and look forward to working collaboratively with all stakeholders to ensure a smooth transition until we have a fully elected school board elected in Novevember 2026.”
