Gordon-Booth Commits to Equity for All in Final Days of Spring Session

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – Continuing her advocacy work to ensure that families of all backgrounds have access to the opportunities they need to thrive, state Rep. Jehan Gordon-Booth, D-Peoria, fought for an agenda that ensures fair representation in government, improved public health and safety, and tax incentives for the Peoria community. She issued the following statement:

“Over the last year we have seen the effects of a pandemic and its impact on state revenue and the increased need for financial relief programs. Passing a responsible state budget that can provide the small businesses of Peoria a path to recovery and give much needed funding to the critical services that residents rely on was a top priority of mine this session. As our community overcomes these setbacks the focus will need to be on modern workforce training to provide people the skills necessary to complete the evolving needs of the 21^st century.”

“As a member of the House Redistricting Committee, one of my top priorities was to ensure that community members had someone on their team, especially those individuals who have not had a voice at the table before. By having a diverse group of legislators representing communities throughout the state, we can develop comprehensive solutions to the serious issues facing our state, like income inequality, violence, and economic development.”

“I’m fortunate to work with an amazing group of people who know that, while we have made much progress in fighting the negative consequences of the ‘War on Drugs’ on black and brown communities, there is still much more work that needs to be done. That is why I worked to create more opportunities for minority business ownership in the cannabis industry with the passage of HB 1443. Illinois has the potential to have more minority cannabis owners than anywhere in the world by this summer.”

“Investment must also be made into economic development, which is why I supported the extension of the River Edge Tax Credit for communities like Peoria. By revitalizing our communities, we can attract tourism, business, and other essential components of a strong economy.”

“I have worked with our law enforcement, first responders and other public safety departments to create innovative solutions to keep our community safe. This session I was able to support legislation that will give our communities the resources needed to prevent crime and reduce violence so everyone can feel secure in the neighborhoods they call home. I am proud of the progress we have made this session. I will continue standing up for equity for all and continue to do the work for the great people of Peoria and Illinois.”
