Yednock Reflects on Session, Backs Measures to Protect Workers Rights and Veterans

SPRINGFIELD – At the conclusion of this spring’s legislative session, state Rep. Lance Yednock, D-Ottawa, issued the following statement:

“I would first like to thank all of the first responders, scientists, nurses and doctors on the front lines of the COVID-19 pandemic. Through their hard work to control this virus, we were able to successfully meet in person for session and pass common-sense legislation to help the hard working people of Illinois.

“This past session, I am extremely proud to say we passed multiple pieces of legislation to protect workers’ rights. I am a proud sponsor of Senate Joint Resolution Constitutional Amendment 11, which protects the fundamental rights of all workers in the state of Illinois to collectively bargain, should they choose to do so. This constitutional amendment will now be put on the next election ballot for voters to decide if we should amend our constitution to protect unionizing. I’m happy to not only protect workers’ rights, but also give voters the opportunity to decide if they would like to make this change to the constitution.

“Additionally, we were able to pass a balanced budget that was achieved through months of bipartisan teamwork to not only meet the needs of everyone in the state, but also stay fiscally responsible. The budget ensures proper funding for education, COVID-19 relief and veterans’ resources, among other things. We also passed unanimously supported bill, Senate Bill 58, to lower the trailer license renewal fee from $118 to $36, saving taxpayers money and answering the requests of hundreds of constituents who have reached out to the office concerned about this issue.

“I also worked to bring justice for the veterans we lost last year at the LaSalle Veterans’ Home due to a COVID-19 outbreak. Through many meetings and subject matter hearings of the Veterans’ Affairs Committee, we were able to talk to state experts and all involved in the tragic loss of life to figure out what exactly happened and how we can prevent future deadly outbreaks like this. The heroes we lost are a constant reminder of the gratitude and respect we owe all veterans around the world.

“There is still a great deal of work to be done throughout the state to put Illinois back on a path to success after the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as keeping the state fiscally responsible, protecting our families and workers, and supporting common sense legislation that will better the lives of everyone who resides in the State. I remain committed to fighting for our families and supporting the constituents of the Illinois Valley and across Illinois.”
