Stuart Appointed to Midwestern Higher Education Compact

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – As a newly appointed commissioner for the Midwestern Higher Education Compact (MHEC), state Rep. Katie Stuart, D-Edwardsville, will join regional policymakers and university leaders in collaborative efforts to encourage best practices in the field of higher education.

“MHEC works to increase high-quality educational opportunities in our region and make sure college is attainable for all students,” said Stuart. “This directly aligns with the work I’ve been doing in the General Assembly to achieve fair funding for Illinois universities, affordability for students and necessary supports to help guarantee their success in higher education.”

The Midwestern Higher Education Compact was established in 1991 to advance cooperation and resource sharing in higher education across Midwestern states. Member states work together to increase access for underserved populations, foster a culture of continuous learning, make college more affordable and communicate the value of and return on investment in higher education. Stuart will represent Illinois on MHEC’s 60-member governing commission, serving a two-year term until Jan. 2023.

“I am looking forward to bringing my experience as a college math instructor and chair of the House Higher Education Committee to MHEC,” said Stuart. “A college degree opens the door to so many different career opportunities, and it should be within reach for all students who want to continue their education.”
