SCHAUMBURG, Ill. – With the recent increase in hate crimes against Sikh-Americans and other minority groups, state Rep. Michelle Mussman, D-Schaumburg, is encouraging members of the community to participate in local events that celebrate cultures different than their own.

“It’s important that we make our children aware of the diversity that creates our neighborhoods,” said Mussman. “In light of the recent increase in hate crimes against Sikhs and other groups, I encourage local residents to stand against hate by expanding their knowledge about different cultures.”

Mussman is highlighting April 2021 as Sikh awareness and appreciation month. Sikhs first came to the Untied States over a century ago. Since then, they have made extensive contributions to communities across the country and Illinois. April therefore recognizes their accomplishments from military and civic service to entertainment and the sciences.

“To create a more peaceful future, we must acknowledge that people’s different backgrounds makes the entire community stronger,” said Mussman. “Regardless of someone’s background, we all have the responsibility to work together and move past our biases of other people.”
