Scherer Backs Bill to Cut Perks for Politicians

DECATUR, Ill. – As families throughout the state struggle to make ends meet, state Rep. Sue Scherer, D-Decatur, is leading by example and announcing her support for a measure that would, among other things, prohibit cost-of-living adjustments for Fiscal Year 2018.

“As I go door to door in my community and talk to the hard-working families I represent, one of the most important issues on their minds is cutting the waste and fraud in state government,” said Scherer.  “This piece of legislation sends an important message to residents that it’s time we put the people’s tax dollars to good use by reigning in these wasteful perks for politicians.”

House Bill 643 would also make it illegal for politicians to try to increase their compensation for mileage and travel lodgings. Scherer, a former school teacher, said families are struggling in the state, and the last thing their hard-earned tax dollars should be used for is to pick up the tab for a four-star hotel.

“I care about the constituents that I represent, and want to make sure their tax dollars are being put to the best possible use, and that means investments in the community,” said Scherer. “I’m supporting this bill because politicians should be held more accountable and share in the sacrifices we are all being asked to make.”
