Yingling Urges Residents to Protect Themselves from COVID-19 Vaccine Scams

ROUND LAKE BEACH, Ill. – As the COVID-19 vaccine is distributed to those most vulnerable to the virus, state Rep. Sam Yingling, D-Grayslake, is warning residents to be cautious of offers promising priority access to the COVID-19 vaccine or treatments for money.

“With many looking to get the COVID-19 vaccine as soon as possible, there are people who are trying to trick residents into believing there are shortcuts to receive the vaccine,” said Yingling. “The only way to get the COVID-19 vaccine is through official government channels, and residents should be very wary of any offer claiming to circumvent that.”

The Illinois Attorney General’s Office has put out a consumer alert for scams related to the COVID-19 vaccine or treatment. The alert reminds residents that no one can pay to receive early access to the vaccine or have their name placed on a distribution list. The Illinois Attorney General’s Office recommends residents protect themselves from potential scams by not attempting to purchase the COVID-19 vaccine or treatment online and not clicking on any links in texts or emails promising early access to COVID-19 treatments. Those looking to report a scam should call the Attorney General’s Consumer Fraud Hotline at 1-800-386-5438.

“It is unfortunate that there are people who are creating confusion and spreading misinformation about the vaccine distribution process in order to scam others,” said Yingling. “I highly encourage anyone who has any questions or concerns about information they receive regarding COVID-19 vaccines to contact the Lake County Health Department to ensure that they have accurate information regarding this important process.”
