“My office has been making mask deliveries to seniors in our district for several months, and given the success we have had implementing that program, we wanted to do more to protect seniors throughout the state against this deadly pandemic,” Moylan said. “The senior population is particularly vulnerable to COVID-19, so we have to make personal protective equipment available to them. It is a simple service we can provide at a relatively low cost that would do a lot of good for Illinois seniors.”
Moylan’s office has been offering free mask deliveries to district residents since July of 2020. Since implementing the program, Moylan’s office has delivered masks to hundreds of homes throughout the district. Seeing a sufficient demand for a free masks for seniors program, Moylan recently sponsored legislation to establish a free mask delivery program for all seniors throughout Illinois.
The Moylan-introduced House Bill 839 would require the Department of Human Services (DHS) to distribute masks to Illinois residents aged 65 and above, regardless of income, on a monthly basis. A supply of no less than 25 masks would be delivered by mail to eligible residents. DHS would identify and register all residents eligible for the program.
“Protecting the most vulnerable population against COVID-19 is of the utmost importance and we have to do all we can to prioritize their safety,” Moylan said. “I look forward to working with my colleagues in the legislature to protect seniors across Illinois through the duration of the COVID-19 pandemic.”
