Hurley Votes to Change House Rules, Calls for Transparency and Accountability

Springfield, Ill. – In an effort to bring transparency and accountability to Springfield, state Rep. Fran Hurley, D-Chicago, voted to change the General Assembly House rules.

“I am very happy to see that lawmakers overwhelmingly voted to change the procedure rules in the House,” said Hurley. “Since my start in the General Assembly, I have been a strong advocate for term limits for leadership positions and ensuring all legislation is heard. I am thrilled to see these changes becoming the new normal for the General Assembly.”

The Illinois House of Representatives took a historic step by voting in new procedural rules. Changes in the rules include term limits for leadership positions, requiring all legislation to be introduced into committees regardless of the party caucus it comes from, as well as more transparent changes to voting in the upcoming session.

“These changes incorporate ideas from across the aisle as well as several changes that the Democratic caucus has been requesting for years,” continued Hurley. “Although these rules are a historic change for Illinois government, there is still much to be done. I look forward to continue working to change the culture in Springfield and allow any Illinoisan to feel welcome in state government.”
