“While federal programs like SNAP and WIC offer vital support to households that are near or below the poverty line, they leave out countless other families who still struggle to make ends meet but whose household income isn’t low enough to qualify them for federal assistance,” Mason said. “To give some lasting relief to those families, I introduced House Bill 2387, which would lower the sales tax rate on critical childcare supplies like baby formula and diapers.”
Mason, a single mother and full-time legislator, has been a longtime advocate for working parents in Springfield. Last year, Mason pushed to expand campaign finance law to allow political fundraising dollars to be used to cover child care expenses, and she fought to pass $290 million in COVID-19 relief funding to help keep child care affordable for families during the pandemic. “We as a legislature should take every opportunity to make this difficult time easier for residents, especially for those who are more vulnerable to financial hardship like families with young children,” Mason said. “I’m committed to working with my colleagues on both sides of the aisle to get my House Bill 2387 passed into law during this year’s spring legislative session.”
