Mason Introduces Measure to Reduce Tax on Diapers and Baby Formula

GURNEE, Ill. – As a strong advocate for the needs of middle and working-class families, state Rep. Joyce Mason, D-Gurnee, introduced House Bill 2387, a measure that would lower the sales tax rate on diapers, baby formula and breastfeeding supplies from 6.25% to 1%.

“While federal programs like SNAP and WIC offer vital support to households that are near or below the poverty line, they leave out countless other families who still struggle to make ends meet but whose household income isn’t low enough to qualify them for federal assistance,” Mason said. “To give some lasting relief to those families, I introduced House Bill 2387, which would lower the sales tax rate on critical childcare supplies like baby formula and diapers.”

Mason, a single mother and full-time legislator, has been a longtime advocate for working parents in Springfield. Last year, Mason pushed to expand campaign finance law to allow political fundraising dollars to be used to cover child care expenses, and she fought to pass $290 million in COVID-19 relief funding to help keep child care affordable for families during the pandemic.
