Mussman Urges Safe Driving Practices, Highlights Impaired Driving Prevention Month

SCHAUMBURG, Ill. – To promote the safety of residents on Illinois roadways, state Rep. Michelle Mussman, D-Schaumburg, is highlighting Impaired Driving Prevention Month by urging drivers to exercise caution before getting behind the wheel of a car.

“While many families are not going out to celebrate the holidays due to the pandemic, this is the time of year that we typically see a spike in alcohol-related traffic accidents,” said Mussman. “Driving while under the influence of drugs or alcohol can have tragic consequences and is simply not worth it, especially when there are so many alternative options to get home safely, like calling a cab, using a ride sharing service or taking public transportation.”

Mussman is raising awareness of Impaired Driving Prevention Month to encourage drivers to think twice before getting behind the wheel while intoxicated. December has been designated as National Impaired Driving Prevention Month to remind residents of the dangers of operating a vehicle while under the influence of drugs or alcohol and to help prevent as many instances of impaired driving as possible. This is especially important during the holiday season, as the majority of alcohol-related traffic fatalities happen on Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has found that over 10,000 lives each year are claimed by impaired driving, the equivalent of nearly 30 lives lost every day.

“We do not need more tragedy in a year that has already been so difficult. Getting behind the wheel while intoxicated could cost you, your passengers or innocent bystanders their lives,” continued Mussman. “The holidays are a great time to reflect and appreciate our blessings, so I encourage drivers to take personal responsibility and use safe driving practices.”

Mussman represents the 56th District, which contains portions of Schaumburg, Hoffman Estates, Elk Grove Village, Hanover Park, Roselle, Rolling Meadows and Palatine.
