Hurley-Backed Measure to Cap Out-of-Pocket Insulin Cost to Take Effect

CHICAGO – To make lifesaving medication more affordable for diabetic Illinoisans, state Rep. Fran Hurley, D-Chicago, recently supported a new measure to cap out-of-pocket insulin costs. This new law takes effect Jan. 1.

“There are many residents of our state who rely on insulin for their livelihood, but insulin prices have soared exponentially in recent years,” said Hurley. “Nobody should have to choose between paying for their medication or putting food on the table and keeping a roof over their head.”

Hurley supported Senate Bill 667 which caps the co-pay for insulin at $100 for a 30-day supply. There are 1.3 million adult diabetics in Illinois, many of whom regularly rely on insulin to maintain their health. According to the American Diabetes Association (ADA), insulin prices tripled between 2002 and 2013, and the average price of insulin has increased by 64% since Jan. 2014.

“I am proud to have supported this new law, which proves Illinois to be a leader in providing relief from outrageous prescription drug costs,” continued Hurley. “I will continue working to build a stronger Illinois and for access to affordable health care.”
