Mussman-Backed Bill to Provide Medical Support for Students Now Law

SCHAUMBURG, Ill. – Students with epilepsy will have improved access to medical assistance if they have a seizure while at school under a new law supported by state Rep. Michelle Mussman, D-Schaumburg.

“Children with medical conditions like epilepsy require specific care and assistance if they experience a seizure,” said Mussman. “I supported the Seizure Smart School Act to ensure students across the state have the opportunity to attend school safely and focus on their education with the confidence that they will have the support they need if they experience a seizure emergency while at school.”

Mussman supported House Bill 1475, the Seizure Smart School Act, which allows parents to submit a seizure action plan to their child’s school outlining specific care guidelines that should be followed to assist that child during a seizure. As well as mandatory seizure training for all school staff, the Mussman-backed law also calls for a designated care aide to be assigned to each student with epilepsy to help them with their seizure action plan.

“Under this new law, parents, teachers and school staff will be a team, securing an action plan and working collaboratively in the best interest of the child to address a potential medical emergency,” continued Mussman. “I look forward to seeing this new law in action to provide better support to students, school staff and teachers, as well as peace of mind to parents.”

Mussman represents the 56th District, which contains portions of Schaumburg, Hoffman Estates, Elk Grove Village, Hanover Park, Roselle, Rolling Meadows and Palatine.
