CHICAGO – State Rep. Kam Buckner, D-Chicago, is encouraging incoming and current college students to apply for the Illinois Legislative Black Caucus Foundation (ILBCF) Scholarship, the deadline for which has been extended to June 4 due to COVID-19. The scholarship is meant to provide educational resources and financial opportunities for African-American students throughout Illinois and has successfully awarded over $750,000 in educational support since its inception in 2005.
“One of the most valuable things a person can do for themselves is to pursue higher education,” Buckner said. “It is through an educated population that we are able to build safe and strong communities for black children to call home.”
The ILBCF scholarship is available to high school students and current undergraduates with plans to continue their education at an accredited two or four-year institution in fall 2020. Applicants must reside in Illinois, submit verification of college enrollment, write a personal statement and include transcripts and appropriate letters of recommendation. For more information or to request an application, please visit www.ilbcf.org or email info@ilbcf.org.
“At many educational institutions, monetary roadblocks still prevent true equal treatment of our students. This scholarship aims to close that gap and make higher education more accessible to Illinois students regardless of race or social class,” Buckner continued. “I highly encourage all of our graduating seniors and current undergraduates to apply for this scholarship, and to aim high in their pursuits of education.”
