Costa Howard Backs Measure to Close Lawmaker Pay Loophole

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – To stop politicians from gaming the system by timing their retirements to grab an additional taxpayer-funded paycheck, state Rep. Terra Costa Howard, D-Glen Ellyn, is backing a new initiative to prohibit legislators from receiving a full month’s pay if they do not serve their entire last month in office.

“It is completely unacceptable that legislators get paid a full month’s salary even if they resign on the first day of the month,” said Costa Howard. “Like everyone else in Illinois, lawmakers should receive a fair day’s pay for a full day’s work – but not a full month’s pay for a single day’s work. It’s time to close this loophole and stop allowing lawmakers to enjoy a month of paid vacation at taxpayer expense.”

In collaboration with the Illinois Comptroller’s Office, Costa Howard is supporting HB 4131, a new initiative that will establish a pro-rated payment system for legislators who resign before completing their full terms.

“It’s time to close this loophole and stop lawmakers from taking advantage of the people who pay our salaries,” Costa Howard added. “The people of Illinois deserve public servants who go above and beyond the call of duty, and who put their constituents’ needs first. As a state representative, I am committed to increasing transparency, saving taxpayers money, and rebuilding voters’ trust in our state government.”
