CHICAGO – State Rep. Lindsey LaPointe, D-Chicago, is reminding local residents to celebrate safely this holiday season by recognizing December as National Impaired Driving Awareness and Prevention Month.

“The risks associated with impaired driving can lead to fatal accidents, debilitating injuries and unwanted consequences for everyone involved,” said LaPointe. “By educating our friends and families about the importance of safe driving, we can help keep impaired drivers off the road and protect our loved ones who will be traveling this holiday season.”

Since 1981, every U.S. President has recognized December as National Impaired Driving Awareness and Prevention Month as a commitment to increase safety on our roadways and spread awareness about the dangers of driving impaired. Studies have shown that the holiday season between Thanksgiving and New Year’s Day is one the most dangerous times on the roadways throughout the country due to an increase in impaired driving.

“As we all celebrate the holiday season with family and friends, I want to remind residents to think twice before getting behind the wheel and make smart choices for traveling safely,” said LaPointe. “Whether you choose to designate a sober driver or you rely on public transportation or rides shares, it’s important to celebrate responsibly.”
