DES PLAINES, Ill. – Recognizing the difficulty many residents are facing paying their bills during the COVID-19 crisis, state Rep. Marty Moylan, D-Des Plaines, is highlighting extensions and fee waivers available for utility bill payments.
“With so many unable to work and struggling financially, we must provide options to help them get through these unprecedented times,” Moylan said. “With many facets of the economy not functioning because of the safety measures in place, it is our job to provide resources to help all residents in need of them.”
The state has ordered utility companies to suspend disconnections and late fees due to lack of payment, allowing residents unable to afford their bills to continue receiving these critical services. ComEd also recently announced they would extend this moratorium on disconnections through the end of June. Additionally, the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) has extended the application deadline for residents to receive funding for utility assistance through June 30. More information on this program and how to apply can be found at https://www2.illinois.gov/dceo/CommunityServices/UtilityBillAssistance/Pages/HowtoApply.aspx.
“We are working hard to ensure that residents are able to sufficiently adjust while the stay-at-home order and other necessary safety precautions are in place,” Moylan said. “The health and safety of the residents is our foremost point of concern. That being said, we also are doing everything we can to mitigate the financial hardships many are facing, and encourage any resident in need of assistance to reach out to us and evaluate the options available to them.”
