Yingling-Backed Law Protecting LGBTQ Individuals from Discrimination Takes Effect

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – LGBTQ individuals can no longer be excluded from serving on a jury in any court of Illinois as a new state law co-sponsored by state. Rep. Sam Yingling, D-Grayslake takes effect.

“The fact that, before this law took effect, blatant discrimination was legally allowed to happen is absolutely absurd,” Yingling said. “A jury of one’s peers is supposed to be indicative of the community. I am glad that state law finally protects the LGBTQ community from facing discrimination when it comes to serving on a jury.”

Yingling co-sponsored Senate Bill 1378, which establishes non-discriminatory protections in jury service for Illinois residents who identify as a part of the LGBTQ community, ensuring prospective jurors are not excluded from service due to sexual orientation or gender identity. The bill passed both the Illinois House of Representatives and the Senate unanimously, and took effect on Jan. 1, 2020.

“There is still work to do to fully protect the rights of the LGBTQ community. I will always stand as a proud advocate for our rights, and continue to pass legislation ensuring LGBTQ individuals are treated no differently than anyone else,” Yingling said. “I look forward to continuing my work in Springfield and in the community to bring common-sense reforms that benefit people right now.”
