GLENVIEW, Ill. – Recognizing the challenges of adjusting to major life changes as a result of the pandemic, state Rep. Jennifer Gong-Gershowitz, D-Glennview, is shining a spotlight on the importance of taking care of mental health during the COVID-19 crisis.

“As we practice social distancing to safeguard our physical health, it is equally important to tend to our emotional well-being,” Gong-Gershowitz said. “Our world has been turned upside down and we’ve lost that sense of normalcy and routine that helps us cope with stress and anxiety under ordinary circumstances — but there is nothing about this pandemic that is ordinary.

Gong-Gershowitz is sharing information on mental health resources that are easily accessible during the COVID-19 pandemic, such as tips from the National Alliance on Mental Health (NAMI). Recently, Gong-Gershowitz partnered with NAMI, state Sen. Laura Fine, and state Rep. Robyn Gabel to present a virtual town hall addressing a variety of mental health concerns related to COVID-19, and how to care for mental health issues during the pandemic.

Additionally, Gong-Gershowitz is highlighting the IDHS Mental Health Division’s new free-of-charge emotional support text line Call4Calm. Residents experiencing stress or mental health issues related to COVID-19 can text “TALK” to 552020 to be connected with a mental health professional. Spanish speakers can text “HABLAR” to the same number.

“Talking about how you’re feeling and checking in with others can be incredibly important strategies to cope with the strain of physical isolation and uncertainty during this time,” Gong-Gershowitz continued. “There is no shame in needing help right now. I encourage anyone who is having a difficult time to take advantage of these resources.”
