Evans: New Term in Springfield Crucial for Chicago and South Suburbs

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – After taking the oath of office to continue his service for the Southside of Chicago and the nearby suburbs in the General Assembly, state Rep. Marcus Evans Jr., D-Chicago, stated the next two years in Springfield will be crucial to the health, safety and prosperity of the areas working families.

“Service providers and public education have been severely hit in our community because of the dangerous cuts being pushed by reckless politicians in Springfield,” said Evans.  “These next two years will be crucial for our community and we need to make sure we have the access and opportunities in our neighborhoods that we deserve.”

As the governor continues to pressure lawmakers into passing demands that will hurt working families in Illinois, many social service agencies in the process have been hurt as a means for Republican politicians to apply extra pressure on local lawmakers.  To make matters worse, the past two years have seen major funding shortfalls to Chicago Public Schools and other vital programs to help vulnerable residents and to keep local neighborhoods safe by providing resources for local youth.

Evans has fought back against these efforts, voting to increase funding to Chicago Public Schools, as well as for vital programs for mental health facilities, domestic violence shelters, and food services for needy seniors.  Evans has also fought to provide people a second chance by making it easier for people with a record to acquire a professional license to start a business and create more jobs in the local community.

“This next session will determine if our state will support all families in all communities, or leave some out in the cold,” said Evans.  “I’m not going to stop fighting until all our kids can learn in the classroom, and all our workers and earn at their job.”
