Mason Condemns Price Gouging, Warns of Scams During COVID-19 Pandemic

GURNEE, Ill. – In response to businesses charging outrageous marked-up prices for necessities amidst the COVID-19 pandemic, also referred to as coronavirus, state Rep. Joyce Mason, D-Gurnee, is speaking out against predatory practices.

“In difficult times like these, it is vital that we come together to look out for the health and wellness of our neighbors,” Mason said. “It is beyond wrong for businesses to take advantage of fear and tragedy by price gouging on necessary supplies just to increase their bottom line.”

Mason is taking a stand after statewide reports of price gouging on supplies like toilet paper, hand sanitizer and disinfectant wipes. Gov. J.B. Pritzker issued an executive order Monday that prohibits price gouging and Attorney General Kwame Raoul’s office has begun to investigate allegations of bad behavior. Residents can report possible cases of price gouging and fraud related to COVID-19 at www.IllinoisAttorneyGeneral.gov.

“Proactive actions like regularly washing hands and social distancing are important, but it is also critical that residents do not panic and hoard supplies,” Mason said. “Illinois has a strong and steady food supply chain, but that can easily be disrupted in hoarding situations. Illinois needs compassion now more than ever.”
