Yingling Raises Awareness for Resources for Victims of Domestic Abuse

ROUND LAKE BEACH, Ill. – With the Governor’s shelter-in-place order being extended to April 30, state Rep. Sam Yingling, D–Grayslake, is highlighting resources for victims of domestic violence and child abuse.

“While the shelter-in-place order is in place to keep people healthy, there are many people whose homes are not safe for them,” said Yingling. “It is critical to make sure that those who are in unsafe situations at home have the resources and support they need to stay safe during this difficult time.”

According to the Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS), reports of child abuse dropped by 45% after school closings went into effect, causing DCFS officials to worry that child abuse happening but not being reported. The increasing time spent at home due to the closing of public places may exacerbate violence for those in unsafe households. Yingling is urging those in need of help to call the Illinois Domestic Violence Hotline at 1-877-863-6338 or the Illinois Child Abuse Hotline at 1-800-252-2873.

During his time as state representative, Yingling has fought to protect victims of abuse. He has backed legislation to help victims of abuse, including bills to eliminate the statute of limitation for sexual abuse charges and increase penalties for repeated domestic abusers. Yingling has also held a cell phone drive for victims of domestic violence.

“Now more than ever, we need to support those who are in unsafe situations at home,” said Yingling. “I highly encourage anyone who feels unsafe or believes a child is in an unsafe situation to reach out for help.”
