ROUND LAKE BEACH, Ill. – As the COVID-19 pandemic continues to disrupt the economy, state Rep. Sam Yingling, D-Grayslake, is highlighting the expansion of unemployment benefits to cover gig-workers and independent contractors.
“With many losing their jobs due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the decision to expand unemployment benefits to gig-workers and independent contractors will be crucial to keeping many Illinoisans afloat during these difficult times,” Yingling said. “Providing more support to the residents hit hardest is crucial, and I highly encourage those who have lost employment due to this pandemic to apply for unemployment benefits.”
With the passage of the CARES Act last month by the United States Congress, eligible gig-workers and independent contractors will be able to start receiving unemployment insurance the week of May 11. Unemployment insurance provides temporary income maintenance for those who have lost their job through no fault of their own, including due to the current pandemic. “With the amount of stress and fear that many are feeling due to the pandemic, the last thing that they need is uncertainly on how they are going to pay for their basic needs,” Yingling continued. “I applaud the expansion of benefits to these groups of workers, and look forward to providing more support for families as we continue to respond to this crisis.”
