Reitz Promotes Growing Meal Assistance Programs for the Elderly

RED BUD, Ill. – State Rep. Nathan Reitz, D-Steeleville, is promoting the expansion of meal assistance programs provided by the Illinois Department on Aging (IDOA) to address seniors’ increased need for aid during the COVID-19 crisis.

“While we continue to combat the spread of COVID-19, it’s critical that our seniors and older citizens get the help that they need when many other meal programs have been suspended and trips to grocery stores are limited,” Reitz said. “After lifetimes of hard work and contribution to our communities, we need to make sure that seniors who face food insecurity have the care they need.”

The Illinois Department on Aging is providing $7 million in meal assistance to older Illinoisans across the state. Due to COVID-19 shutdown procedures, many meal distribution sites are no longer available, and the IDOA is shifting to more home delivery methods. “As we all continue to navigate this process, ensuring at-risk populations receive the help they need during trying times is a priority for me,” Reitz said. “We must make sure that we take the steps to help protect those who are vulnerable while also providing the proper resources to the many different groups of people and businesses that have been affected by this pandemic.”
