ROUND LAKE BEACH, Ill. – As part of the effort to slow the spread of COVID-19, state Rep. Sam Yingling, D-Grayslake, is asking residents to wear cloth masks in public and is encouraging those without masks to make them at home.

“To successfully fight this virus, we must all take steps to reduce the spread of this disease, which is why wearing a mask is so important,” Yingling said. “Wearing a mask in public is a simple way for everyone to do their part to keep themselves and others safe, and fight against this virus.”

The Center for Disease Control (CDC) recommends that individuals in public settings where proper social distancing may not be achieved, like grocery stores, should wear cloth face masks. These cloth face masks can easily be made using low-cost household items, including t-shirts and bandanas. The CDC asks for individuals to wear cloth face masks instead of surgical masks or N-95 respirators, which should be reserved for medical professionals. For more information on how to create these homemade cloth face masks, please visit the CDC’s website at https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/prevent-getting-sick/diy-cloth-face-coverings.html.

“We must take advantage of every resource we have, whether it’s staying indoors or wearing a cloth mask, to fight against this disease,” Yingling continued. “I hope that everyone who is planning on going into public will take the time to properly protect themselves and others by wearing a cloth face mask.”
