Pappas Combats Domestic Violence, Raises Awareness of Support Options

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – State Rep. Diane Pappas, D-Itasca, is calling attention to the problem of domestic violence during the COVID-19 outbreak. COVID-19-related distancing procedures have closed many public places and the added stress of isolation can aggravate preexisting problems. Although some offices and shelters may have closed, resources are still available for anyone in unsafe living conditions.

“No one living with a dangerous partner should ever feel alone. While Illinois is putting a great deal of resources into combatting COVID-19, critical state services, such as those to assist people dealing with domestic violence, are still accessible,” Pappas said. “I encourage anyone in an unsafe environment to reach out to trained professionals for help.”

Pappas is encouraging anyone living in a potentially hazardous home to contact professionals that are available to help. Anyone feeling unsafe but not in immediate danger should contact the Illinois Domestic Violence Hotline at 877-863-6338. Those in immediate danger should call the police.

“COVID-19 might be capturing the headlines right now, but I am still dedicated to keeping our community safe from all dangers,” Pappas said. “Now more than ever, I want those living with dangerous partners to know that there are people ready to give them a hand.”
