DES PLAINES, Ill. – State Rep. Marty Moylan, D-Des Plaines, wants residents to be aware that the state’s income tax filing deadline has been pushed back to July 15.

“The COVID-19 public health crisis has caused considerable economic pain due to the necessary precautions of shutting down businesses, public gatherings and staying at home,” Moylan said. “Extending the tax deadline will provide some much needed relief for the residents and businesses who deserve some room to breathe.”

Illinois has extended the income tax filing deadline from April 15 to July 15, coinciding with the federal extension. This extension will give people extra time to get their affairs in order during the stay home order, help those experiencing any temporary financial setback due to the COVID-19 crisis and allow those who need to meet with accountants or economic advisors in person some time until it is deemed safe for public gatherings. Those who are expecting to get money back are encouraged to file earlier than the July deadline in order to receive their refund in a timely fashion.

“In these unprecedented times we need to first and foremost protect the safety of the residents of Illinois,” Moylan said. “Having said that, we also need to take common sense steps where we can to help folks during these difficult times.”

Residents with concerns about COVID-19 are encouraged to call the Illinois Department of Public Health’s hotline at 1-800-889-3931 or email DPH.SICK@ILLINOIS.GOV. To stay up to date with all new information about COVID-19, visit coronavirus.illinois.gov.
