Hernandez Encourages Food Donations to Benefit Local Food Pantry

AURORA, Ill. –State rep. Barbara Hernandez, D-Aurora, is hosting a virtual donation drive and encouraging residents to donate food items and household goods to support local families in need during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“As we work to stop the spread of COVID-19, many families are finding themselves in positions where they cannot put food on their tables, which is why local food banks are so crucial to our communities,” said Hernandez. “While we all should continue to practice social distancing and stay home when possible, community members who are healthy and able to may want to consider donating items to our local food pantries and help support our most vulnerable families in need.”

Hernandez is encouraging healthy residents to donate food items and household goods to the Aurora Area Interfaith Food Pantry, located at 1110 Jericho Rd. in Aurora. Donations can be dropped off at the food pantry on Mondays and Wednesdays from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Food items needed include nonperishable food items like cereal, rice, peanut butter, jellies and jams and canned goods including vegetables, beans, soups, chicken and fruit. Household goods needed include brown paper bags, new plastic bags, gloves and disinfectant. Donations should not be dropped off at Hernandez’s district office.

“Now more than ever, we must come together as a community to help families affected by food insecurity,” said Hernandez. “I am grateful for the men and women who keep our local food pantries running all year round, and especially right now during this uncertain period of time.”
