SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – State Rep. Nathan Reitz, D-Steeleville, is raising awareness of the issue domestic violence during the COVID-19 outbreak and encouraging anyone facing violence to call the Illinois Domestic Violence Hotline.

“It’s critical that those facing the threat of domestic violence know that the assistance they need is still available,” Reitz said. “Illinois’ resources are there for anyone who might be in danger in their own home, or who has already had to deal with a violent partner. Law enforcement professionals are, of course, still on the front lines dealing with this as well, but the spread of COVID-19 has not curtailed any safety options for those who may be facing violence in their home.”

Reitz is encouraging anyone seeking help to reach out to professionals that are available to help. COVID-19-related distancing procedures have closed many public places and the added stress of isolation can aggravate preexisting problems. For anyone feeling unsafe, the Illinois Domestic Violence Hotline is 877-863-6338. Those in immediate danger should contact the police.

“The social distancing measures Illinois has taken during the spread of this disease may have left some people with the impression that critical state services are no longer available, but that is not the case,” Reitz said. “Anyone who does not feel secure in their own home always has somewhere to turn. I urge those people to use the resources that are provided to help protect themselves or anyone living in their home.”
