AURORA, Ill. – State Rep. Barbara Hernandez, D-Aurora, is making sure residents are made aware that the state and federal tax filing deadlines have been extended from April 15 to July 15 in response to the societal disruption caused by the COVID-19 crisis.

“Many families and business owners may be struggling to make ends meet during these pressing and uncertain times as a result of the COVID-19 crisis,” said Hernandez. “Extending the state’s tax filing deadline is an effort to provide some financial relief from tax payers, and is a great step in softening the overall burden and disruption that this crisis has caused families in our state.”

Gov. J.B. Pritzker announced that the state tax filing deadline would be extended from April 15 to July 15, mirroring the tax filing deadline extension at the federal level. Refunds will still be issued for taxpayers who file prior to the new deadline, and Hernandez encourages residents who are owed money to file early.

“The Department of Revenue and Internal Revenue Service are still processing refunds now, so if you are able to file and you are owed a refund, there is no need to wait to file until the extended deadline,” said Hernandez. “You should still receive your refund in a timely manner.”
