SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – In response to businesses charging outrageous marked-up prices for necessities amidst the COVID-19 pandemic, also referred to as coronavirus, state Rep. Sam Yingling, D-Grayslake, is speaking out against predatory practices.

“It is beyond wrong for businesses to take advantage of these times of uncertainty and tragedy by price gouging on necessary supplies for no reason but to increase their bottom line,” Yingling said. “It’s predatory, it’s wrong, and people participating in this behavior need to be held accountable for their actions.”

Yingling is taking a stand after statewide reports of price gouging on supplies like toilet paper, hand sanitizer and disinfectant wipes. Gov. J.B. Pritzker issued an executive order Monday that prohibits price gouging and Attorney General Kwame Raoul’s office has begun to investigate allegations of bad behavior. Residents can report possible cases of price gouging and fraud related to COVID-19 at www.IllinoisAttorneyGeneral.gov.

“In trying times such as these, we need to come together as a community and work to support each other, not greedily take advantage of the situation for profit,” Yingling said. “I hope others will join me in protecting their neighbors by reporting those who are price gouging to the proper authorities.”
