CHICAGO – State Rep. Justin Slaughter, D-Chicago, recently partnered with local elected officials and organizations to host a Black History Month Celebration.

“Outside of the holiday season, Black History Month is hands down my favorite time of the year, because it is a time dedicated to celebrating the myriad of contributions made by African-Americans,” said Slaughter. “I encourage everyone to celebrate Black history 365 days a year and learn about the role of Black people in shaping the American story.”

The celebration began with remarks from Rep. Slaughter and his fellow elected officials on the origins of Black History Month and what Black History Month means to the community. Attendees were treated to the talents of a group of students from the local Musical Arts Institute along with a dance performance from the Fort Steppers. With a little under a week left in February, residents are encouraged to continue the celebration of Black History Month.

“Seeing the young people from the Musical Arts Institute perform with such high levels of professionalism and musicianship filled me with overwhelming joy,” said Slaughter. “We should be sure to not only celebrate the accomplishments of African-Americans from the past, but we should also be sure to uplift and honor those who are making a difference today, including our young people.”
