Mason Introduces Legislation to Increase Efficiency in Order of Protection Process

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – Victims of domestic violence would be able to request an order of protection electronically anywhere in Illinois under legislation introduced by state Rep. Joyce Mason, D-Gurnee, to make the process more accessible and efficient statewide.

“For people experiencing violence by an abuser, ensuring a safe and fast process to get an order of protection is crucial,” said Mason. “This legislation allows people to submit the necessary paperwork outside normal business hours in a secure and private place, without needing to travel or wait in long lines at the courthouse.”

Mason’s House Bill 4455 would make the process of filing a petition for an order of protection more accessible by allowing for electronic filing in all counties in Illinois. While an online system is already in place for DeKalb, Kendall, Lake, LaSalle, McHenry, Will and Winnebago Counties, residents of other counties currently must file their request in person. Mason’s bill removes one step in a lengthy, often trauma-filled process for victims of abuse, and also offers victims the ability to seek assistance from a domestic violence advocate in preparing and filing the petition electronically.

“Because domestic violence occurs in all corners of our state, it’s important that all victims have the same access to online resources to request an order of protection in a time-effective way,” said Mason. “Requiring a victim to physically visit the courthouse takes hours out of their day and can further put them in a vulnerable position when their safety is already at risk.”
