Crespo Responds to CPS IG Resignation

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – State Rep. Fred Crespo, D-Hoffman Estates, released the following statement urging for the swift appointment of a truly independent inspector general for the Chicago Public Schools (CPS):

“Given the continuous inability by CPS to adequately protect children, a new inspector general must be appointed quickly. The students of CPS and their families need an inspector general that will have a record of integrity, responsible leadership and most importantly, true independence.

“Ultimately, the Office of the Inspector General ensures that CPS administrators are driven solely by their commitment to the safety and well-being of millions of students. Much remains to be done in order to address issues ranging from how special education services are administered to putting an end to sexual abuse through our work in the Make SAFE Task Force. The new Inspector General will play a crucial role in this work as member of this task force and only true independence will ensure they’re able to put the interest of students above all else.”

Crespo has worked closely on issues relating to special education and sexual abuse within CPS, championing legislation to create the Make Sexual Abuse Fully Extinct (Make SAFE) Task Force, which will take an in-depth look at current practices in all K-12 schools in order provide a report on the best practices to prevent sexual abuse in schools and provide appropriate support to victims. Crespo currently serves as the vice chair of the House Elementary & Secondary Education: School Curriculum & Policies Committee.
