VILLA PARK, Ill – As part of her work to achieve gender pay equity, state Rep. Deb Conroy, D-Villa Park, is hosting a free salary negotiation workshop on Monday, Feb. 24 from 6:30 pm to 8 pm at the Villa Park Library located at 305 S. Ardmore Ave. in Villa Park.
“I co-founded the House Democratic Women’s Caucus two years ago because I know that it’s not enough to just talk about empowering women – we have to work together and do the hard work on the ground and in the legislature to bring systemic, lasting change that will lift up generations of women,” said Conroy. “While women have made tremendous strides in the workplace, the reality is that women still make less on the dollar than men who do the same work. There are many reasons for this, but as women, we have to make sure that we’re educating and empowering ourselves and those around us to stand up and fight for equity.”
The workshop is facilitated by Women Employed, an advocacy group that seeks to improve the economic status of women and remove barriers to economic equity. In addition to providing resources and tips for navigating salary negotiations, presenters will provide information regarding current state laws to benefit employment seekers including a new law co-sponsored by Conroy that prohibits employers from asking about an applicant’s previous salary history.
“This interactive workshop will help to give women of all ages, from all experience levels, and in all fields and industries the tools to negotiate for what they deserve,” Conroy added. “I encourage all job seekers and those who are currently employed to participate in this free and informative event to help tackle one of the most difficult and intimidating parts of professional life – the salary negotiation process.”
