Mason Takes Stand Against Child Emotional Abuse

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – Children experiencing emotional abuse from a parent or guardian would be protected under state law through legislation being championed by state Rep. Joyce Mason, D-Gurnee.

“Unlike physical abuse, emotional or mental abuse is more likely to go unnoticed and untreated in children, while causing serious, long-lasting impacts on their lives,” said Mason. “By including emotional abuse in the very definition of abuse, my legislation would help ensure those significantly suffering from all types of abuse by a parent or family member are protected.”

Mason’s House Bill 3632 makes changes to existing law to improve protections for children who are experiencing emotional abuse at home. The bill would add emotional abuse to the mandated reporting requirements for professionals working with children, who would be required to report to the Illinois Department of Child and Family Services (DCFS) known or suspected instances of children experiencing non-physical harm but extreme mental suffering. Emotional abuse can have devastating effects on a child’s behavioral, emotional and physical development, and is a significant form of trauma

“As a mother and domestic violence advocate, I want to ensure every child experiencing emotional harm is protected in this state. Children need to be protected when their parents, guardians or those meant to care for them are no longer preserving their mental and physical stability and health,” said Mason. “Emotional abuse is linked to depression, anxiety, low self-esteem and an increased risk of suicide, and that’s why I am fighting for every child’s right to feel safe.”
