Greenwood Commends Illinois State Board of Education Move Announcing Property Tax Relief Grants for Eligible School Districts

EAST ST. LOUIS, Ill. – The Illinois State Board of Education announced Monday that it is unveiling property tax relief grants for 39 school districts in Illinois, and state Rep. LaToya Greenwood, D-East St. Louis, praised the move which reduces the tax burden while guaranteeing the availability of funds to subsidize two local school districts in the area.

“For too long in Illinois, the primary source of funding for local school districts has been derived on local property tax revenues,” Greenwood said. “The announcement by the Illinois State Board of Education Monday to introduce new property tax relief grants will significantly reduce property taxes and will then utilize grant dollars to fund two local school districts. This is great news for our community.”

The Illinois State Board of Education announced its plans to expand the property tax relief grant program to include two new school districts in East St. Louis and Cahokia; specifically Cahokia Community Unit School District 187 and East St. Louis School District 189. Local homeowners will see property tax rates reduced while guaranteeing state funding for each of these school districts.

“As a member of the Property Tax Relief Task Force, I recognize that we must do more to address inflating property tax rates,” Greenwood said. “However, this announcement by the board of education is a significant step forward for families residing within the boundaries of these two school districts.”
