Reitz Voices Support for New Law Giving Law Enforcement, Prosecutors More Ability to Crack Down on Crime

RED BUD, Ill. – A new law supported by state Rep. Nathan Reitz, D-Steeleville, will combat sexual assault by giving law enforcement members the tools they need to catch criminals and keep Illinois communities safe.

“We have to make sure that law enforcement and prosecutors aren’t limited by restrictions that prevent them from doing their job effectively,” Reitz said. “This law will help bring justice to our community and remove the threat of sexual assault by giving law enforcement professionals the time they need to put predators behind bars.”

Reitz is supporting House Bill 2135, which removes the statute of limitations on sexual assault crimes, and grants law enforcement and prosecutors in the state a greater ability and time they need to enforce the law. The legislation passed the Illinois House and Senate with a unanimous, bipartisan vote and went into effect Jan 1.

“My priority is keeping our communities safe and cracking down on criminals who try and hurt innocent people. Getting rid of needless requirements sends the message loud and clear that we are serious about those who prey on others with these heinous crimes,” Reitz said. “We’re closing off a loophole in Illinois’ legal system so those who protect us all can do their jobs and put predators behind bars.”
