Mussman Supported Initiative to Increase Access to Mental Health Services Now Law

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – Access to mental health services for families across Illinois will be expanded under a new law passed with support by state Rep. Michelle Mussman, D-Schaumburg.

“Taking care of your mental health is just as important as taking care of your physical health. There should be no shame in seeking out help, so we must put an end to the negative stigma surrounding mental health issues,” said Mussman. “This new law will ensure the state takes a proactive approach to help residents suffering from a lack of appropriate mental health care.”

House Bill 2247, a new law recently supported by Mussman, will require the Illinois Department of Human Services (DHS) to create a comprehensive and coordinated community-based pilot program to help Illinoisans with a mental health diagnosis. As part of the pilot project, DHS will implement programs in areas that have a high need for mental health services and enhance access to services through social media campaigns, community partnerships and educational institutions that provide programs in mental health or social work.

“This legislation will allow for exploration into how to best improve access to mental health services for Illinois’ most vulnerable and underserved residents,” continued Mussman. “I am proud to see this legislation become law, providing a path forward to compassionately treat and provide access to residents who currently lack needed mental health care.”

Mussman represents the 56th District, which contains portions of Schaumburg, Hoffman Estates, Elk Grove Village, Hanover Park, Roselle, Rolling Meadows and Palatine.
