BLOOMINGDALE, Ill. – In recognition of Impaired Driving Prevention Month, state Rep. Diane Pappas, D-Itasca, is shining a light on the importance of driving safely this holiday season.

“For Impaired Driving Prevention Month, I wanted to take the time to emphasize the importance of having a designated driver and making responsible decisions,” Pappas said. “While the holidays can be a time of celebration and relaxation, it’s always important to exercise caution, for your sake and the sake of others on the road.”

Impaired driving has taken an enormous toll on American lives. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration found that in 2017, over 10,000 lives were lost in alcohol-related motor vehicle crashes. The same report shows alcohol-related crashes made up almost 30% of all traffic fatalities; 100% of which were preventable.

Pappas wants to ensure that residents are celebrating safely during the holidays and that they are not taking unnecessary risks while driving.

“No one wants to get a phone call about a loved one being involved in a car accident, especially around this time of year,” said Pappas. “However inconvenient it may seem in the moment, it’s always worthwhile to be safe.”

For those struggling with alcohol or other substance use, residents can call the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration’s hotline at 1-800-662-HELP (4357) 24/7, 365 days a year.
