DES PLAINES, Ill – As the holiday season commences, state Rep. Marty Moylan, D-Des Plaines, is reminding everyone that December is National Drunk and Drugged Driving Prevention Month, and to never drive while under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

“Community safety is always a top priority, and during this season it is imperative to remind people of the dangers of impaired driving,” Moylan said. “There is no excuse for driving while intoxicated, and we need to do everything in our power to prevent avoidable deaths and injuries caused by reckless impaired drivers.”

In 2018, drunk and drugged driving claimed 10,511 lives, which is equivalent to one person every 48 minutes. This constitutes 29%f all traffic fatalities according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Stronger law enforcement has decreased the amount of intoxicated driving fatalities significantly over time, but thousands are still injured and killed every year.

Some individual prevention methods recommended by the Center for Disease Control include but are not limited to; designating a sober driver, not letting others who are intoxicated get behind the wheel, calling a taxi or rideshare service if under the influence of drugs or alcohol and making sure any guests you are with have arranged rides with sober drivers.

“Law enforcement does a terrific job in stopping intoxicated drivers,” Moylan said. “But preventative measures have to be made by the drivers themselves to effectively combat drunk and drugged driving.”
