AURORA, Ill. – State Rep. Barbara Hernandez, D-Aurora, has backed a measure to create a new property tax relief program, designed to help middle-class families.

“When I walk door to door talking to residents, dozens of people share the same concern about the continuously rising property taxes in the state,” Hernandez said. “Creating a property tax relief fund will help take the burden off of middle-class families, and contribute to a fairer tax system in the state.

Hernandez backed Senate Bill 39, which creates the Illinois Property Tax Relief Fund, giving homeowners an annual rebate on their bills. The rebates will be funded by the state, in part through the new Fair Tax backed by Hernandez, which cuts income taxes on local residents while making millionaires and billionaires pay their fair share.

“Property taxes are simply too high, and it is unacceptable that hard-working families are struggling to keep up with paying these high rates,” said Hernandez. “I often talk to residents who work multiple jobs but are still unable to make ends meet. Middle-class families will benefit from this new program, ultimately making Illinois a better place to live.”
